The magic of Marco Polo Designs fine-glass jewelry begins with our their handmade Italian lamp-work beads. These Marco Polo-designed glass “gems” are built up from multiple layers of intricately-patterned glass, capturing all of the light and color of the rainbow. 24k gold and sterling silver foil gives these beads a luminous heart that heightens the play of light, while stardust-like copper-dust “avventurina” and shimmering dichroic material add mesmerizing accents. Using the finest precious-metal findings, Swarovski crystals and other prime ingredients, the artisan jewelry makers in our airy Portland, Oregon studio hand-craft precious primary beads into works of “wearable art”.

Founder Jane Barthelemy is an accomplished opera diva and artist who lived and performed in Venice, Italy for several years. During that time, she established lasting relationships with leading local glass artisans, creating jewelry to wear on-stage. In the 15 years since her return to the US, Jane has grown Marco Polo Designs into an artistic pioneer in contemporary glass jewelry design.

Claude and Penny Cruz met Jane in 2004. Their artistic talents and their lifelong romance with glass blossomed during the course of a 5-year friendship with her. Under Jane’s guidance, they studied the art and science of glass jewelry-making, becoming her partners in 2009. Claude and Penny now make extended twice-a-year trips to Italy, to prototype their exciting new bead designs with our talented Murano and Venice bead artisans. Their passion is to lead the Marco Polo Designs “family” through the next steps in its evolution, to delight their customers for many years to come.

They use the finest quality materials in their jewelry, including their own exclusive handmade glass beads, combined with freshwater pearls, Swarovski crystals, Bohemian glass, precious and semi precious gemstones, on sterling silver or gold vermeil. Their exclusive glass beads are handmade over a single flame, using many layers and colors of glass, created to our own designs in Murano glass. Many of the beads have an internal layer of 24k gold or sterling silver foil, for increased radiance and luminosity. They continually research and invent new techniques, controlling each bead carefully to maintain highest quality standards.

Marco Polo uses sterling silver and gold vermeil findings. Their jewelry is hypoallergenic and nickel-free.
